I oppose the replacement of the Endangered Species Act with the Species Conservation Act, 2025.
The new legislation will bring about a decrease in the number of protected species, including species of special concern such as the Monarch butterfly, snapping turtle and wood thrush.
It will result in a weaker enforcement regime, providing for only registration rather than public review.
It will remove rights of citizens to comment on permits and orders. It removes a rigorous review process and protections for species not classified as endangered or threatened.
It potentially exempts development projects from provincial and municipal legislation and regulations.
The new legislation prioitizes development over conservation. As a citizen who has spent my life working for the protection of our natural heritage, I strongly oppose this attack on the environmental birthright of my own and future generations.
