I live in downtown Toronto. I ride a bicycle everywhere as I do not own a car. This proposal is a terrible one. As is well documented, building more roads does not reduce congestion; more drivers simply fill the new capacity. Many many people use bicycles to get around Toronto; they aren't less important than drivers. I ride to work. I pay enough tax each year that I reach the CPP and EI contribution maximums. The provincial government should not be telling cities and towns what they can and can't do, simply because the Premier has a hard time getting to work in Toronto. This is tyrannical nonsense. The first attempt, Bill 212, was already blocked because it was found to be clearly full of misinformation designed to appeal to road users. Admittedly, roads in Toronto are full of traffic. This is not due to bike lanes. This is due to high levels of immigration to the city causing there to be more drivers on the road. It is well documented that removing bike lanes does not reduce congestion. Adding bike lanes does not increase congestion. The government has no answers to congestion so they come up with divisive plans to pit drivers against cyclists.
