As a field biologist in Canada, I regularly witness the tension between industrial development and conservation. Too often, industry wins, and our most sensitive species lose. The loss of even small areas of habitat may seem insignificant in isolation, but over time and across landscapes, the cumulative impact is devastating. These effects ripple far beyond the species at risk, affecting entire ecosystems and ultimately, our own well-being.

I strongly urge the Ontario government to reconsider the proposed changes to the Species Conservation Act. Removing habitat protections and weakening safeguards for species at risk will move us dangerously in the wrong direction. These provincial protections are often the final barrier between survival and damage to the populations of many species.

Instead of dismantling conservation measures, we should be investing in programs that protect and restore habitats. Doing so benefits not only wildlife but also people, as healthy natural spaces are essential for our mental health, environmental stability, and shared future.
