I am writing to express my deep concern about the changes introduced through Bill 5 and the new Species Conservation Act. Limiting habitat protections to only a species’ dwelling place and removing provincial protections for 35 at-risk bird species puts these birds—and the ecosystems they support—in serious danger.
Ontario has both a moral and ecological responsibility to safeguard our native bird populations. Birds play a vital role in pollination, pest control, and maintaining healthy forests and wetlands. Once their habitats are lost, recovery becomes far more difficult and costly—if it’s even possible.
Relying on voluntary actions and federal laws is not enough. I urge the province to take leadership by restoring strong, enforceable habitat protections and by investing in effective conservation programs. Ontario’s birds deserve meaningful protection, not weakened standards that leave their survival to chance.
Please take action now to ensure that at-risk bird species and their habitats are protected and recovered for future generations.
