Cities need the ability to allocate public space on their roads to ensure that they're providing a balanced approach for getting around.
As it stands today, our bike networks in Toronto, Ottawa, and others are incomplete, and don't let cycling be a meaningful alternative to get around without a car. To balance this, some roads will need to have the current allocation of space changed, which sometimes requires reducing car lanes.
As a recent judicial ruling (Cycle Toronto et al. v. Attorney General of Ontario et al., 2025.) demonstrates– bike lanes make cycling safer, and don't cause traffic congestion. Despite this ruling, Bill 60 ignores evidence based decision making, opting to prevent cities from making evidence based decision making, and preserve the status quo – dangerous and congested roads.
This bill ignores the advice from staff, experts, and municipalities. It is an inappropriate use of power based on anecdotes and opinion.
