I am very concerned about the proposed changes to the Species Conservation Act as it fails to protect Endangered Species and will undoubtedly impact the environmental balance. By removing these protections, our biological systems will be negatively impacted and will result in habitat destruction, greater issues with forest fires, and imbalanced insect populations.
Our environment is already under attack from fossil fuel extraction and processing. To run roughshod over legislated greenbelts to create another highway, or to build new high-ticket homes and industrial complexes fails future generations of Ontarians. It fails them by not regulating the fossil fuel industry. It fails them by increased emissions and reduced ways to capture carbon emissions - reducing longevity and their ability to be a healthy part of our society. There is currently a case before the courts where youth are challenging Ontario's MInistries of Health and the Environment for failing to protect the health of our younger generations due to environmental roll-backs. When these youth win their case, they will do so at great cost to the province.
Removing the protections of the Endangered Species Act is just plain poor financial management.
