I am very opposed to the removal of the Ontario Endangered Species Act, which would harm an already precarious and delicate ecosystem under threat from human encroachment and climate change.
Under the current ESA all decisions are made by an independent body, based on empirical evidence, including Indigenous Traditional Knowledge. The current ESA in place protects animals, birds, amphibians, plants, etc on the list from being killed and protects their habitat.
It seems the proposed amended ESA favours development, not conservation, is oriented towards profit and not the wellbeing of our local environment, which humans share and need as well as our more than human creatures. As climate change increases rapidly, policies must remain in place to prevent the destruction of the fragile ecosystems Ontario has and the species that live in them. We must preserve and build ecological wisdom, strength and resilience, not dismantle it. Serious and caring stewardship is needed in this province and on this planet.
