I am writing to express my deep concern and heartfelt plea against Bill 60, which proposes stripping municipalities of their authority to make evidence-based decisions about street design. This legislation would have serious consequences for cities like Toronto and the communities that rely on safe, accessible transportation options.

Bill 60 undermines local decision-making, even when projects are supported by data and residents. It will worsen traffic congestion—not reduce it. The government’s own experts have consistently stated that bike lanes are not the cause of gridlock. Removing them will only incentivize more cars on the road, making congestion and emissions worse.

Beyond congestion, this bill will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes save lives by preventing serious injuries for people biking, walking, and driving. Eliminating these lanes threatens other critical uses of road space, including transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets. It also locks cities into car-dependent designs that undermine climate goals and public health.

This is not about being “pro-bike” or “anti-car.” It’s about evidence-based transportation planning and local democracy. No matter how many times the claim is repeated, bike lanes do not cause traffic congestion. Repeating it again and again does not make it true.

On a personal note, biking is my primary mode of transportation. As a proud Torontonian and recent first-time homeowner, I cannot afford a car—especially in the current housing crisis. Bike lanes are lifelines that allow me to navigate the city safely and efficiently amidst transit construction and congestion. They support my physical and mental well-being and connect me to my community.

During my recent work at the Paris 2024 Olympics, I saw firsthand how thoughtful cycling infrastructure transforms urban life. Paris embraced cycling as an accessible, sustainable way to move through the city, with e-bikes and modern bike-sharing systems making active transportation possible for everyone. Toronto deserves the same vision—not a step backward.

I urge you to reject Bill 60 and instead invest in safer, healthier, and more inclusive streets. Our communities depend on it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
