Ontario By Bike, the recognized sector association that develops and promotes cycle tourism across Ontario - a part of the tourism economy that contribute $532 million to the economy annually - strongly opposes Bill 60 and the impacts it is having on regional and municipal cycling infrastructure.
Having worked in a professional capacity with many regional and municipal governments as a consultant and partner - we know that a considerable effort, expense and use of resources is used to develop cycling master plans, which dictate the network and where bike lanes are installed.
Cycling infrastructure is installed to provide vulnerable road users with a safe option to get to their destinations. Bill 60 impedes the safety of cyclists, and the plans of many communities to make a connected and safe cycling network and encourage active transportation.
It is a huge overreach in power and jurisdiction by the Province.
