It is completely unacceptable that the Doug Ford government plans to consolidate the province’s 36 local conservation agencies down to just seven. Our province is vast, and needs vary from one locale to another. The environment minister has repeatedly promised no changes to the existing structure and no layoffs. We need the existing local conservation agencies to do the essential work of reducing the risks of natural hazards like flooding, erosion and drought, and ensuring that development doesn’t overtax local watersheds and landscapes.
