I'm strongly opposed to the Ontario Government proposal to download water and wastewater services from Peel Region to the lower tier municipalities. These are essential public utilities that should remain fully accountable to the community, not pushed to lower levels of government or external agencies and private operators. Peel Region has the highest level of drinking water and wastewater services and any lower level of oversight or operators who most likely won't have the resources, oversight, transparency and budget needed to manage them responsibly.
As a homeowner in Mississauga, I am already looking at a significant property tax increase due to waste and roads being downloaded. To further put these on Mississauga taxpayers, along with Brampton and Caledon is irresponsible.
Water and Wastewater infrastructure is complex, expensive, and critical to public health. Downloading these services risks higher costs for residents, inconsistent service quality, and reduced long term planning. Instead of offloading responsibility, the Ontario Government should focus on strengthening public management, ensuring stable funding, and protecting access to safe, affordable water for everyone.
This is too important to cut corners on and transfer responsibility from Peel Region to Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. Please keep our drinking water safe and maintain these services under the Region of Peel.
