SDG Counties does not support the proposed prohibition of removing vehicle lanes based on provincial regulations. Removing vehicle lanes on municipal roads is a local decision and the proposed regulations add unnecessary hurdles to proper transportation planning. The proposal could impact projects where the County improves traffic safety and community amenities on roads where a 3-4 lane configuration on former provincial highways may not be necessary. For example, SDG has reduced vehicle lanes for past and future South Stormont waterfront improvement projects as part of improving intersection design through roundabouts. The former 3-4 lane sections were only around 1km long with the remainder of the road being 2 lanes. The reduction of lanes and introduction of roundabouts improved traffic safety, encouraged community revitalization, and in some cases properly designed turning lanes replaced unsafe through lanes.
