I am writing to oppose the proposed amalgamation of Conservation Authorities. I don't believe that this has any benefit to Ontario other than potential cost savings to the province. I believe that if this proposal were to move forward to implementation, it will be detrimental to the environment in Ontario. The proposed boundaries are far too large to be effective inany wayy. As an example, the Huron-Superior Regional Authority would span 78 municipalities and 13 MPPs. How can you form an effective board with 78 different municipal perspectives, or coordinated advocacy from 13 MP?s. In its current form, each conservation authority is well-sized to allow for input from each municipality it serves. In my area, the conservation authority is extremely responsive to the needs of the residents and is are expert in the environment of the area. By broadening the scope, we no longer have local experts in the conservation authorities, rather we will broaden ineffective efforts. In my opinion, this proposal is another step from this conservative government's playbook to continue to destroy the environment in the name of the economy. This proposal gives less voice to the issues of the environment and more power over it for developers and private businesses that exploit it for the sake of a couple dollars.
