I strongly oppose the Province’s proposed “Huron-Superior Regional Conservation Authority” boundary configuration as outlined in Environmental Registry Notice 025-1257, which proposes to consolidate the LRCA into a region 1,500 kilometres from the Lakehead Watershed with 72 other southern Ontario municipalities.
The consolidation of the Northwestern Ontario region and the Lake Superior Watershed with the Huron region is illogical and not compatible with the unique needs of the NWO region. In order to maintain effective flood and water management as well as the protection of our with drinking water sources we need an Authority with expertise in our specific region. Our region includes many First Nations communities in Treaty 3 territory that do not have clean drinking water and have had Boil Water advisories for decades because of a lack of provincial and federal funding. Please do not further exploit northern communities and regions in favour of centralizing power with a governance body based in southern Ontario.
I implore the Ontario government not to bulldoze through this legislation which would if passed cause irreparable damage to the systems of accountability and equity which have been successfully forged within the Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority.
