I am writing to oppose the proposed changes to merge conservation authorities in Ontario. Changing from a watershed based governance system to protect these unique ecosystems and water sources would be a mistake and put communities at risk of environmental degradation and flooding.
Decisions are currently made based on how best to protect and conserve the watershed that would be lost with the proposed regionalization.
Please remember why Conservation Authorities were originally established: to provide a way to work across municipal boundaries to combat severe flooding, erosion, and resource depletion from poor land management within a watershed. This focus is even more important as we continue to experience the impact of climate change in our communities.
I am a member of the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) and live in the City of Waterfalls known as Hamilton. I fully support the comments and positions of the HCA board and City of Hamilton council that have been submitted.
