I adamantly oppose the proposed boundaries for the regional consolidation of Ontario’s conservation authorities. By your own proposal’s admission, “Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities play a vital role in watershed management and protecting communities from natural hazards like floods.” As we continue to see weather intensify and affect the landscape of Ontario, we need these local conservation authorities to continue providing their expertise and local knowledge in protecting our land. Amalgamating these services and reducing the oversight they provide will have a grave effect on more than just the land; it will mean jobs (and expertise) lost, fish and wildlife habitats will be significantly altered and/or destroyed, an increase in uninsurable areas due to flooding, more people displaced due to flooding and much more!
This appears to be yet another scheme to bypass proper consultations, strip environmental protections, allow for fast-tracked permits and open up the greenbelt for development. Ontarians have already expressed their desire to protect our great land, particularly the greenbelt, and we will continue to do so because we know that protecting our watersheds, wildlife and land is vital to the future of this province!
Again, I adamantly oppose the proposed boundaries for the regional consolidation of Ontario’s conservation authorities.
