Ontario ‘s watershed approach to managing water resources for the prevention of flooding and pollution, and to promote restoration of functional ecological services. has gained global recognition. Removing the watershed level decision making to a central authority destroys much of this approach. Losing ecosystem services that provide Ontarians with clean drinking water would result in unthinkable impacts to public health and unfathomable economic costs to try to alter impaired water resources after the damage is done. Decades of excellent watershed specific scientific and hydrological work have guided conservation authorities to date and a decision to centralize these authorities would be hugely detrimental to protecting our collective right to clean water.
