I do not support the consolidation of Ontario's conservation authorities. This proposal reduces the current 36 regional entities into seven, geographically huge entities. It is unclear how accountability from the Regional Conservation Authority will be maintained to the local municipalities. Local knowledge and service delivery is critical to maintaining on the ground services to builders, developers and residents. The creation of a huge regional conservation authority will not only decrease accountability but increase bureaucracy, costs and timelines for local communities.
It appears as though this is another step the government of Ontario has taken in the previous years to weaken the ability for Ontario's conservation authorities to protect people and the environment at a time when the effects of global climate change are becoming ever more apparent. I would urge the Ontario government to support science-based, community-focused approaches to growing our economy rather than antidemocratic centralization under the guise of "cutting red tape."
