At a time when the devastating impacts of environmental destruction and climate change are ravaging an ever increasing number of the world's region, and when the desire to protect local food production capability is growing, protecting the greenbelt is both responsible, forward thinking, and supportive of the rural economy. Canada and Ontario have very limited amounts of erable land, particularly rich fertile arable land and land that is a fundamental source of good drinking water. The greenbelt represents just such a resource and protecting it puts Ontario in a better position to remain independent of the food and water related decisions, policies and priorities of other jurisdictions.
