The green belts rounds major towns are very important for recreation ands local produce. Once lost they cannot be returned. Look at all the farmland which was taken out of use north of Pickering which is now non-productive and has been for years. I lived in the green belt around London UK for years and the growth of towns and transport outside it was very successful exercise in how to manage cities.
