I have been commuting along Trafalgar Road, specifically to and from downtown Oakville at least twice a day for the last 15 years. When I was made aware of the proposed high density development around the Oakville GO station my thoughts went from concern to despair.
For many years traffic flowed efficiently north and south along Trafalgar even with the regular operations of GO and Via service. The first major impact to traffic flow occurred when the parking garage was constructed on the south side of the Lakeshore line. At peak service periods, the traffic simply does not move. Aggravated by the fact that all workers are now required to be back in the office, volumes have increased to the point where between 4:45 and 6:00 it is not uncommon to experience sitting through 3-5 cycles of the traffic lights with only 10 to 20 cars in the queue at Cornwall Road in the northbound direction. The intersection becomes gridlocked with cars that cannot move either along Speers (east or west direction) or along Trafalgar. This condition is repeated at South Service Road and then again at Leighland Ave. There have been days where it takes almost 45 minutes to get from Inglehart St to White Oaks Blvd along Trafalgar- 1.5 kms. To put it in perspective, that is the amount of time it takes me to drive from downtown Brampton to downtown Oakville on a Saturday or Sunday. I cannot imagine adding thousands of new residences as well as increases in commercial activity to the already poor road infrastructure.
I am sure traffic studies were prepared in the past in support of various developments including the GO parking garage. Whatever recommendations came out of those studies were either not followed or severely flawed.
Before any new development is considered in the subject area, please take the time to solve the current road/traffic issues. Most importantly, any future development must involve fulsome input from all community stakeholders and the implications of the development must be honestly presented to the community so decisions can be properly considered.
