I am very much opposed to the Open for Business planning tool. It gives far too much discretion to municipalities to override legislation that is very much in the public interest in terms of ensuring Ontario's traditionally high standards of environmental and conservation policy. Numerous municipalities haven't requested such a planning tool as they feel it is unnecessary.
I agree with many municipal leaders and officials who believe the tool could well promote costly urban sprawl, unsustainable growth, and an inevitable reduction in province-wide health and safety standards as municipalities begin to seek exemption from provincial standards one by one.
Short-term expediency is a poor substitute for official plans and provincial legislation that have been implemented after many years of public consultation and careful planning.
