This proposal is a big step backwards for Ontario's growth plans. These amendments would increase the number of cars on the road and allow transit expansion in low density areas. Together, this would only serve to worsen traffic issues in the greater golden horseshoe. These amendments do nothing to limit urban sprawl. Indeed, the proposed changes would simply enable urban sprawl to happen faster than it ever has. There are very good reasons why municipalities must follow the rules set out in the Planning Act and provincial growth plans. Previous governments understood that past municipal decisions regarding growth and development were not sustainable. Ontario needs laws and policies that are forward looking and benefit the most people. These amendments are short-sighted and will not benefit Ontarians. If you are really a government who is 'for the people', your policies should actually help as many people as possible, not just developers.
