The Far North act was originally contemplated to be a planning framework for land use and land development up north, but it has too turned into a bureaucratic nightmare and has stifled economic development in Northern Ontario for over 9 years. The people of Ontario want change, the indigenous people of Ontario want change. We want an efficient, simple, collaborative process to enable communities to be part of land use planning and land development.
Government should be an enabling body, that enables progress, meaningful but measured development and growth. The Far North act is restrictive, redundant and prohibits Northern communities to have a larger say and control over development of land and corresponding revenue sharing. Repeal the act as it adds no value, rather it hinders development.
