I disagree with the statement made throughout the discussion paper that ethanol is generally cheaper to produce that its oil-based equivalent. Until we switch to sources other than subsidized corn as feedstock, ethanol will continue to be a source of energy that utilizes more resources than it saves. That generates more emissions than it claims. That takes valuable farmland out of food production while leading to the increased use of environment damaging pesticides and man-made fertilizers.

I must use higher, more expensive grades of gas in my boat, chainsaw, generator, wood chipper, log splitter, snowblower etc. and use fuel stabilizer and additional water filters in order to avoid the deleterious effect of this nasty, inefficient hydrocarbon that was deployed at a time when we had a goal of becoming energy self-sufficient. Failure to take these precautions has in the past lead to inconvenient and costly repairs of fuel systems. I can't imagine how much more problematic and expensive an increased percentage of ethanol in fuel is going to be.

Bottom line. Keep the fuel standard where it is or eliminate it entirely.
