I add my voice to many others in calling for world-class nuclear emergency plans in Ontario. With so many nuclear reactors in this province close to highly populated areas, we must have the best possible plans for dealing with emergencies. Ideally we close down reactors as they come to their due date. To think that a Fukushima-type accident can't happen here is naive. Canada is not exempt from "accidents."

We already have a big challenge trying to figure out what to do with nuclear waste and are passing on to future generations the responsibility for being care-takers of our waste caused today. How do we responsibly deal with future emergencies around the post-use waste material as well as around the reactors still in use? We need highest quality science-driven plans for all stages of nuclear emergencies from mine to toxic waste.

I support the Call for Public Safety's recommendations. Drinking water contamination from a large-scale accident will be enormous around the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence regions where huge numbers of people live and there is such diversity of the natural world.

This is an opportunity for doing the right thing -- not cutting corners or pretending there is no risk -- by planning carefully for future emergencies.
