The Fukushima disaster should teach us the importance of implementing a robust emergency plan for Ontario. The Great Lakes are so close to many nuclear facilities, including those on the American side of the border, that it is crucial that the Ontario government develop a clear and detailed plan to prepare for any nuclear emergency. For example, without clean, uncontaminated drinking water our society would not survive. This issue needs to be addressed in any emergency plan in a clear and transparent way. The dangers of nuclear power are inherent in its production along with the toxic waste it produces. The Darlington nuclear plant is so close to the GTA that a Fukushima type disaster would make Toronto and the entire surrounding areas uninhabitable. Promoting the continued use of nuclear power comes with the responsibility to prepare the citizens of Ontario for an emergency event. Please make sure to protect the viability of our society for future generations by drawing up a clear, detailed, transparent and honest nuclear disaster emergency plan.
