I agree with the proposal to provide more affordable housing options and infilling cities by adding second units to homes, etc. however, "housing options" is such a vague and useless concept, that it makes me doubt the objectives of the plan. Is building a mansion at the expense of endangered species a "housing option?" Endlessly expanding the winding, car dependent, cookie cutter subdivisions, is that a "housing option?" I would like to see significantly more details about what the plan entails. We really don't need more of the same, we need high impact housing designed around transportation infrastructure that eliminates traffic and car dependency. Shoehorning in more people by expanding the boarders of cities and towns, that are already struggling to manage the movement of people is a waste of our natural resources.
The aim of "reducing development costs" is completely unnecessary. Are these companies really struggling to maintain financial solvency? Effectively, the cost of sustainable and well thought out construction is being offloaded to Ontario citizens so that companies can continue to churn high profits. You can't drive more than 15 minutes in most areas in SW Ontario without seeing an endless expanse of houses under construction, or construction cranes putting up more condos. There are countless customers lined up to buy overpriced, poorly constructed, homes, so I really fail to see what the issue for Developers is and why they should be the ones to benefit.
People need homes, but they also need access to well thought out infrastructure, efficient transportation, and natural resources (food, water, air, shade, leisure). Giving more power and authority to Development companies, and under a government that has very little regard for the value of the Golden Horseshoe, air quality, water quality, etc will put the focus on creating housing that generates the most profit, rather than what Ontario actually needs. We are being sold short.
