Bill 108 is clearly suited for developers’ interests. I find it irresponsible to pass a bill that will let developers pay to break the law, while ignoring scientific evidence about the environment. Just recently the UN released a report announcing the projected extinction of over 1 million species in 10 years. This devastation to biodiversity and ecosystems will have significant ramifications for the human species and our food systems. Yet Bill 108 will strip protections for endangered species. As a mother, I am kept up at night wondering about the world my children will inherit as a result of our past and current actions. It is time you do the right thing and protect our environment. Please consider greener ways to build new homes, such as approving smaller homes, secondary suites, incentivizing mid-rise buildings, developing abandoned brownfield sites and building in the Whitebelt.
I am also concerned about the ramifications the bill will have on affordable housing and community planning. We need sustainable communities in Ontario, not profit-driven developments. Bill 108 removes decision-making from local councils who know their community needs, and absolves builders from any financial responsibility for community improvement.
