I strongly object to this proposal. It is a safety issue for all recreational users of the woods including hunters to have rifles fired so close to multi use trails. Furthermore using bait piles to attract bears is unethical and with this change hunters could conceivably shoot without even getting off their vehicles, not very “sporting” to say the least. We criticize the canned hunts that take place in other countries yet we are moving closer to them with this proposal. Furthermore the spring bear hunt results in many orphaned cubs who often suffer and die, which is why most US states no longer allow it. Any ethical hunter would not participate in a hunt that leads to the slow death of the offspring of their intended target.
There are many more non hunters that enjoy the woods. I feel their concerns usually take a back seat to the minority hunting lobby, maybe due to the revenue from licences and guiding fees, however there is far more money to be made in ecotourism. I would like to feel safe on these trails.
