This letter is written in support of the proposal Section 55 Regulation for Forestry.
We strongly feel that the act presents serious risk, if implemented without proper consideration and consultation, regarding the very real and potentially damaging impacts to our communities and the forest industry, of which we are a part of. The process to date has marginalized and turned a blind eye to our Aboriginal and Treaty rights as enshrined in our Treaties and the constitution of Canada. It is also imperative that we have active representation, as First Nations people, on the proposed expert panel. Through this panel, our people who live and work in the forest regions of Ontario will be able to bring their inherent and experiential knowledge to the table so that it can be incorporated into any implementation plan for the ESA. We urge the government to take the time to do this right, so that all of the options can be fully accessed.
