Thank you for extending the moratorium on water bottling permits.
We have become addicted to the convenience of commercially bottled water. Not only is this an unconscionable subsidy to extremely profitable entities like Nestle, it also threatens the ability of local authorities to guarantee their citizens access to this vital resource. In addition, our love of convenience is also responsible for waste in the production, distribution, and disposal of millions of plastic bottles, many of which are just discarded in public spaces — another unnecessary cost to our society.
The occasions on which bottled water is actually required are very rare, since, with rare exceptions, Ontarians already have access to clean and tasty tap water. We have paid for the infrastructure which supplies this water. We don’t need the additional environmental and social costs entailed in the widespread use of bottled water.
For these reasons, I believe the moratorium on bottled water permits should become permanent.
