There is a CRITICAL need for public education - skills and knowledge education for cyclists , but also for motor vehicle operators.
I am a cyclist of 33 years experience Seldom do I complete a ride with out a motor vehicle driver passing too close, honking, revving - (even "boating" ie - trying to physically push me across the lane) - all to 'teach me a lesson" about laws that don't even exist !
I regularly make police reports, but if the incident was not witnessed - nothing can be done - Police will perhaps send a letter to the owner of the vehicle involved...
Where are the Public Service Announcements on radio and television regarding basic bicycle / motor vehicle interaction!
I bet you can't find more than one licensed driver out of ten that is aware that cyclists in Ontario have rights to use the full lane! The sheer ignorance is maddening as well as dangerous..
The MOT and other ministries continue to fund, build and promote facilities for timid and new cyclists - there will never be facilities everywhere they want to go -- what then? many will just quit cycling when they find such
a hostile environment....
We need to start building a respectful road culture in this province RIGHT NOW!
