I support this initiative fully.
One way to have safer highways and streets is to have less traffic in the downtown core of Ottawa. I often see large semi trucks and trailers driving dangerously fast. I would suggest limiting the times such large vehicles can enter the downtown core.
As well, I would suggest raising parking fees. This would encourage citizens coming to downtown Ottawa to either take public transport or arrive via bicycle. Currently, transit fares are more expensive a couple to take the bus into the city centre than it is for them to pay for parking on a Friday night, since parking is free after 5:30pm.
I would encourage the city plans to include safe cycling routes for children to go to school and for cycling routes that allow people to do every day things like go to the grocery store, go to parks, community centres, etc, and to include routes to transit stations. The only way to encourage more riders is to have safe infrastructure that is linked in a logical manner and maintained year round.
