CYCLING AND TRANSIT
A key opportunity regarding THE Cycling Ontario program is to work with municipalities to develop safe, convenient routes to Transit stations for cyclists from communities up to 5 km from these Transit stops.
This will allow people to commute to their destination without the use of a car. They will get healthy exercise as a part of their commute. They'll also lower pollution and reduce the need for expensive roads.
Ottawa is a prime city for this with the development of our new LRT system. This approach is also appropriate for Bus Rapid Transit and other forms of Transit.
In addition, some thought could be given to providing a bike lending service at destination Transit stops in the core areas of Ottawa and other cities. If not a lending service, perhaps a moderately priced bike rental service for people who have significant distance to go from the Transit stop to their ultimate destination. This might be a way to minimize the need for people to bring their bikes on Transit.
All of this also assumes the provision of ample, secure bike parking facilities especially at Transit stops.
On another theme: Design of cycling infrastructure should meet the European criterion of: Would you let your children ride on this route? See:
