Caribou management/protection should be focused for areas in Ontario that has current success in maintaining healthy Caribou population. The linkage through the DD range is not an area that should be “managed with a focus on specific landscapes that may support temporary caribou occupancy or movement between the continuous range and Lake Superior”. There is no data suggesting that this linkage is being used or will be used in the future by Caribou. The social economic impact to local communities can be significant and MNRF needs to take that into consideration.
MNRF should conduct an open and transparent study looking at the potential impact of wood supply before introducing new legislation. Also, MNRF needs to be clear on how decommissioning of old roads will be financed and what will be the impact to the general public who uses these roads regularly for trapping, hunting?
