This anaerobic digestion facility is a crucial part of building a sustainable waste management system for the GTA.
1. Greenhouse gases
This facility will result in a net reduction of GHG’s for the GTA. Methane has 30x the heat trapping potential of CO2. This facility reduces the amount of methane released into the atmosphere. When the methane is burned as natural gas, we release a less impactful GHG and further avoid consuming petroleum products that have to be mined.
2. Sulphur particulates
These environments are generally manipulated so sulphides are precipitated along with metals like nickel and zinc.
3. Noise pollution from additional trucks
If 100 trucks are to move to and from the facility over the course of one day, that’s roughly 100/24 = 4 trucks every hour. Considering heavy industry has been a part of out community for as long as I can remember, I doubt this will make much of a difference to already negligible amounts of noise pollution.
I encourage fellow members of the community to refrain from engaging in NIMBY-ism.
