I applaud the government for trying to change our recycling but I do have some concerns. One is that I have heard that some of the things I recycle in Sarnia, end up in landfill anyways as there are no processing plants or convenient plants to recycle them in. This has always been a concern to me. With making the producers responsible for the recycling, I do not think that this will necessarily solve the problem of over-packaging and they will just put any costs they incur onto the consumer. So other than saving the government some money, in all odds this will not change the amount of waste going to landfill. A better route to take is making it mandatory for producers to limit the amount of packaging they use. I know some of this is for safety purposes, but some of it is definitely over-kill. It would be nice to have green bins in our area too, not just the blue box. Another thing I have noticed is that when they pick up the blue boxes, it is all put into the same garbage chute, I believe at one time paper was separate from glass and metals. If residents are sorting already, why is it put together again, just to be sorted once more.
