Ministerial Zoning Orders should only be used in very, very exceptional circumstances, not to greenlight development. As opposed to extending the authority of MZO's, the amendments I would like to see to MZO's are the following:
They must include extensive public consultation.
They must adhere to the Environmental Bill of Rights.
They must adhere to laws concerning Indigenous rights.
They must not over-rule heritage designation.
They must never impinge on sensitive wetlands, endangered species, and protected lands and waters.
They must always consider the integrity and unity of a community over outside interests, especially those that are primarily profit-based.
