I strongly support the addition of the Paris Galt moraine into the Greenbelt. The moraine provides critical groundwater recharge to support water supply in the region and protects water quality of groundwater sources. Groundwater recharge also helps maintain ecological flows in the region's rivers and streams.
Protection of the moraine will help provide clean and abundant drinking water, recreation, fisheries and a number of other benefits for the long term. Protecting the moraine in advance of future development ensures that the environmental supports for human well being in the area are in place.
Delineating the boundary of the moraine is likely best undertaken in collaboration with municipalities.
I also strongly support the addition of urban river valleys in the Greenbelt. These river valleys provide key connections from the Greenbelt to the Lake Ontario shoreline. Urban river valleys provide critical connecting corridors to help wildlife move from areas farther south to the north. They enable our natural areas to adapt to climate change. The continued presence and health of wildlife ensures that we continue to enjoy benefits provided by natural areas.
