I am delighted to hear that this government wants to expand the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt grows our food, cleans our air and water. The Greenbelt takes care of us. Thank you for this initiative.
However, this government also wants to build a highway across the Greenbelt, a four-to-six freeway, which will cut across farmland, nearly 100 waterways and pave 160 hectares of Greenbelt land. This is extremely disturbing because new highways, and sprawling subdivisions are threatening the Greenbelt’s future. The previous government did a study and found that to build this highway was not feasible, unnecessary, and costly, an estimated $6 billion to save drivers a mere 30 to 60 seconds of driving, and Mayor Crombie says that this highway will have devastating effects.
We are facing a climate crisis and one million species are on the verge of extinction. More than ever, we need governments to respond by protecting the Greenbelt, nature, wildlife, and endangered species. Why then is this government wanting to build this highway?
Doug Ford promised to protect the Greenbelt. I urge Doug Ford to keep his promise.
