While OGRA is generally supportive of most of the plan, there are two areas in which we wish to underline our support. First, is the initiative to improve winter maintenance on northern highways. This is an issue that affects many communities in the north and in which we have heard the most about. Safe roads are not only a public health issue but an economic issue as well.

The second area in which OGRA wholeheartedly supports is the 2+1 road pilot being proposed. Although not outlined specifically in this plan it is hinted at. Such an initiative would bring the innovative safe systems approach to road safety currently practiced in countries such as Sweden, Ireland, and Australia to Northern Ontario. 2+1 roads have proven to reduce serious & fatal injuries in these countries and can be implemented relatively cost effectively. These types of initiatives should form part of a broader provincewide safe systems approach to road safety.
