The increasing human population makes all other problems worse.

Sir David Attenborough: "If we continue on our current path, we will face the collapse of everything that gives us our security." PIC Patron Sir David Attenborough addressed the UN Security Council

There is no human circumstance more tragic than the persisting existence of a harmful condition for which a remedy is readily available. Family planning, to relate population to world resources, is practical and necessary. Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we do not yet understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with resources we possess.
What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victims.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Civil Rights Leader

The command 'Be fruitful and multiply' was promulgated, according to our authorities, when the population of the world consisted of two people.
William Ralph Inge - English author, Anglican priest, professor of divinity at Cambridge

Do you want a world of more people having less, or fewer people having more? - Terry Spahr, filmmaker, 8 Billion Angels

It's very frustrating as people don't want to address this topic. It's our population growth that underlies just about every single one of the problems that we've inflicted on the planet. If there were just a few of us then the nasty things we do wouldn't really matter and Mother Nature would take care of it -- but there are so many of us. We should be talking about somehow curtailing human population growth.
Jane Goodall - Chimpanzee Researcher

Politicians are not leaders. They are followers. We must mobilize.
7
"When girls are educated and when they stay in schools, they get married later in their lives, then they have less children and that helps us to reduce the impacts of climate change that the population increase brings."
- Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Prize laureate

We must alert and organise the world's people to pressure world leaders to take specific steps to solve the two root causes of our environmental crises - exploding population growth and wasteful consumption of irreplaceable resources. Over consumption and overpopulation underlie every environmental problem we face today.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau - Oceanographer

So more growth is going to solve all the problems that growth is causing? Only the profiteers of growth believe that.

In the last 200 years the population of our planet has grown exponentially, at a rate of 1.9% per year. If it continued at this rate, with the population doubling every 40 years, by 2600 we would all be standing literally shoulder to shoulder.
Prof Stephen Hawking - The Universe in a Nutshell

Basically, then, there are only two kinds of solutions to the population problem. One is a "birth rate solution," in which we find ways to lower the birth rate. The other is a "death rate solution," in which ways to raise the death rate - war, famine, pestilence - find us.
Paul Ehrlich - author of The Population Bomb

“One of the great challenges today is the population explosion. Unless we are able to tackle this issue effectively we will be confronted with the problem of the natural resources being inadequate for all the human beings on this earth.”
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 14th leader of Tibetan Buddhists.

"I would like my grandchild to remember the warnings I’ve given, that we can’t press the Earth any more than we’re pressing it now. We have to back off a bit — either in our personal demands or in the size of the population — or they’re not going to have such a great future."
Dr. David Schindler : Order of Canada, Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, Canada’s highest scientific honor.

To quote Kofi Annan UN Secretary-General, “Population stabilization should become a priority for sustainable development”.

Universal, voluntary access to family planning, the UN notes, "...could bring more
benefits to more people at less cost than any other single technology available to the human race."

Fact: Continued global population growth, together with over consumption, is
incompatible with a healthy, sustainable future for humanity and all other
life on our planet.

Solutions that are effective are impossible to implement politically and solutions that are politically acceptable are ineffective.

"Anyone who believes you can have infinite exponential growth on a finite planet is either a madman or an economist."
Kenneth Boulding - economist, cofounder of General Systems Theory

"As I see it, humanity needs to reduce its impact on the Earth urgently and there are three ways to achieve this: we can stop consuming so many resources, we can change our technology and we can reduce the growth of our population."
- Sir David Attenborough, Population Institute Canada Patron

Prof Al Bartlett warned that population growth is the greatest challenge facing humanity, and recognized “ sustainable growth “ as an oxymoron. He explained:
'Smart growth' destroys the environment. 'Dumb growth' destroys the environment. The only difference is that 'smart growth' does it with good taste. It's like booking passage on the Titanic. Whether you go first-class or steerage, the result is the same.
