If the provincial govt mandates conservation authorities to take on new responsibilities the provincial govt needs to providing new funding.
The importance of their role in recreation should remain mandatory and fully funded. Conservation areas are some of the most accessible ways for people in the north to easily and accessibly be in nature in a safe way that is monitored and maintained. This benefits the mental and physical health of Ontario’s citizens.
This has never been more true than in and following the pandemic, when people need the outdoors to remain healthy. The proposed changes are a shame and very disappointing, in light of the ways that people in my area have relied on nature, parks, wilderness and recreation to get through the last 16 months. People will continue to practice this health and well-being now that they understand how beneficial and accessible it is.
