I'm feeling completely disillusioned with the Ontario government. I strongly oppose logging boreal forests for wood pellets. The boreal forest stores carbon and is a natural carbon sink that should be preserved in an our collective effort to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. The science tells us that burning wood pellets does not produce clean energy. We need to be focusing on integrating renewable energy from solar and wind into our homes, businesses and transportation systems, not chopping down trees. The Ontario government should be focusing on the health of the planet and people, looking at the health of the ecosystem as a whole, rather than pursuing economic growth at all costs.
The forest biomass industry is not a circular economy in the way that it is being practiced. Apart from the burning of wood being just as dirty as burning fossil fuels, logging trees from primary forests to meet the growing demand for wood pellets, is a move away from supporting biodiversity and natural carbon sequestration. I'm concerned and angered by objectives that would “streamline permitting and reduce regulatory burden for all sectors which use forest biomass.” That clearly makes it easier for industry to extract natural resources without proper environmental protections in place.
