I am writing to express my strong objection to this proposed legislation. Time and time again it has been demonstrated that industries are irresponsive to adjusting their practices in order to reduce greenhouse emissions, barring a financial interest compelling them to do so. Cap-and-trade is necessary, not only because it is an effective component of an action plan to slow climate change, but also to transform the mentality of industry going forward towards focussing on strategies and innovation which protects our environment. This legislation does not absolve the province of significant liability associated with contract cancellations, and instead positions Ontario as an unfaithful partner in business. This government has already spent countless tax dollars on litigation without any success; clearly this antagonizing approach has been ineffective. I strongly urge that the government retain existing cap-and-trade regulations, and be steadfast in moving forward an effective climate change strategy based on science driven solutions.
