I believe the whitetail “rut” times should be geared towards archery hunters. Compound archery hunters at that.
With today’s current technology and improvements seen with crossbows, the use of crossbows should not be allowed to co-exist with compounds for “archery only” seasons without doctors or medical/disability approval. Crossbows are just as accurate and lethal to similar distances as muzzle loading guns. Similar to what is existing in Western Canada.
Gun hunts during the rut don’t make sense, since most gun hunters are “dogging” deer and pushing bush anyways. The “rut” should be used by archery hunters to rattle, call, and entice bucks in closer for archery purposes. This would also allow for better breeding and increased population. Deer numbers are way down. Something should be done ASAP to improve the numbers before it’s too late.
The controlled hunt should be moved to expose the rut period for archery or archery should be allowed to take place during the controlled hunt, without a controlled validation. Hunter orange to be worn, but archery to continue.
