If we assume that the new government intends to introduce new carbon reduction targets (which I doubt), and if we assume that they will introduce and credible and bona fide plan to reach those targets (which I doubt even more), I would ask why we should fix something that isn't broken. The existing cap and trade legislation includes a credible plan for reducing carbon emissions, one which is revenue neutral for citizens and puts the cost of carbon on those who emit the most. I cannot support the removal of the cap and trade plan until a superior alternative has been proposed, which is not the case. Should this proposed bill be approved (which seems likely given the distribution of seats in the Legislature), I look forward to federal leadership in this area and to the imposition of a price on carbon on January 1.
