RE: DISCUSSION PAPER on GEOLOGIC CARBON STORAGE IN ONTARIO

I realize that this discussion paper is specifically for long-term underground geologic storage of carbon dioxide in deep bedrock formations on Crown owned lands. However, I would like to point out that the same issues would exist for developing other types of carbon sequestration projects on Crown land, specifically biological sequestration and soil carbonization projects.

The paper states that the intent of the proposed changes to the Mining Act would provide more certainty and oversight for the demonstration of new and emerging technologies, and that the current structure of the legislative framework creates challenges for enabling projects that utilize these technologies on Crown lands.

In addition to modifying the Mining Act to allow for pilot and demonstration projects for geological carbon storage on Crown lands, which the writer fully supports, I would suggest that the same consideration and the appropriate legislative changes be made for biological carbon sequestration projects.

By expanding the current review process for geological sequestration to include biological sequestration, it would ensure that all businesses have a path to enable their pilot or demonstration projects on Crown lands with the appropriate oversight and accountability, and would foster flexible, adaptable approaches, while protecting public and environmental safety.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this important topic which would foster the development of climate change adaptation and mitigation technologies in Ontario.
