Q3: Reuse and save! I admire the work done in my city (Hamilton) to upgrade seventies-era towers. See example: https://www.eraarch.ca/project/ken-soble-tower-transformation/ These buildings are well-constructed, and it makes sense to renew them rather than tear down. The build quality of what’s going up in my area now is dreadful. We literally can’t build them like we used to.
Q2: Liven up main streets and downtowns by encouraging second floor residences above commercial properties. Review legislation around fire exits/staircases, find modern solutions where possible, provide grants for owners to do the work.
Q4: Perhaps you should re-think housing at the Ontario Place site. Having year-round occupants could be a good thing. Could this be a model affordable housing development opportunity?
